I don't know if you remember in November or December when I was up in Phoenix, I may have mentioned I was going to see my mom who was in hospice care at my childhood home in Prescott.
She was in very high spirits when I saw her, mostly because she loved all the attention the nurses gave her. They called her "Princess" ironically because of how demanding and oblivious she was. ☺️
My mom liked to collect antique dolls. The last time I saw her forty sets of creepy doll-eyes were staring at us from around the room - every inch of dresser space was covered in dolls or pill bottles. Everyone else found them creepy, but she loved them.
When she passed away I saw a doll with beautiful blue butterfly wings flying off to heaven in my mind. That painting has taken months to finish, because a couple of times I really believe she didn't like it and I had to erase the face and start over.
One night I asked her to inspire me so that I could finish this painting, and when I randomly wiped paint off the brush onto another empty canvas, I suddenly saw this other image and had to paint it for her (see attached). My mom was a Diva for sure - she always talked about how she was prom queen, so the Marilyn Monroe painting made me laugh.
Then I realized when I looked at Marilyn Monroe's dress in that painting, it looked a lot like Blue butterfly wings. 😱 And Marilyn Monroe looks like a Barbie Doll with blue butterfly wings.
In the face of the doll I'm trying to capture my mom's dignity. She went through unspeakable trauma in her childhood, and while she was a very controlling and difficult person, she was always smiling and kind and sweet and loving to everyone.
